HBO has recently announced that they are in production on a new documentary film that will be a behind the scenes adventure on the making of the movie, The Godfather. The 1972 film, written by Mario Puzo, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, will be entitled; Francis & The Godfather. The original 1972 film is considered a masterpiece and is one of the top three greatest American films of all time. Many critics, and film fans alike, continue to rank it in the number one position of all time despite the formidable presence of such films as Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind and Casablanca.
The film, according to HBO, will actually be a scripted affair written by screenwriter Andrew Farotte. He is currently working on the revision of his original screenplay that had appeared on 2015’s Black List. The film will be an in depth look at the creation and the production of the legendary The Godfather from Coppola signing on to direct to casting Pacino and Brando to some rather anxious moments when the production crews had some nervous dealings with New York’s mafia families in real life. Echo Lake Entertainment will be producing the film.
For the 1972 film season, The Godfather swept the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director for Coppola and Best Actor for Brando. Film critic, A.D. Murphy, who reviewed the film for Variety in 1972 ,thought the focus was really on Pacino’s character when he wrote that, “It is Pacino, last seen (by too few) in Panic In Needle Park, who makes the smash impression here. Initially seen as the son whom Brando wanted to go more or less straight (while son James Caan was to become part of the organization), Pacino matures under the trauma of an assassination attempt on Brando, his own double-murder revenge for that on corrupt cop Sterling Hayden and rival gangster Al Lettieri, the counter-vengeance murder of his Sicilian bride, and a series of other personnel readjustments which at fadeout find him king of his own mob.”
