The Associated Press seeks a Newsperson/Broadcast Writer for its West Regional editing desk in Phoenix, Arizona.

A broadcast writer at a U.S. regional news desk writes, files and helps manage the broadcast writing operation in a multi-state region. The writers are part of a dynamic, 24/7 operation that includes editors from text, photo, multimedia and video. Staff members work as a team to ensure AP owns coverage of the day’s news in all formats.

The broadcast writer reports to the regional Broadcast Editor, and works closely with news editors and reporters in the region as well as the national broadcast editorial team in Washington. Working with the regional Broadcast Editor, the writer will manage and help execute the broadcast report in the territory. This requires the ability to work quickly and lucidly under extreme deadline pressure at all hours, including late nights and early mornings.

The broadcast writer will also assist the news supervisor in writing, editing and reporting news stories from the region.

Qualifications: Ideal candidates will have two or more years of professional news experience in writing or editing. A strong sense of competition is essential, as is the demonstrated ability to be a self-starter while working as part of a team with other editors and bureaus. The newsperson must be aggressive and adept at reordering priorities as needed, particularly under deadline pressure. * strong writing and editing skills, and a broad understanding of state, national and international news perspectives. * experience in multiple formats, especially video, is a plus. * effective communication skills and an ability to work on a larger team while being a self-starter are essential.
