Medical Design Engineer

Job Location:
Cortland, NY

Business Contribution:
Maintain and develop biomedical products, design methods, techniques, practices and procedures to ensure the design and manufacture of products which meet or exceed customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities:
Design and develop products to meet customer and market needs.

Leverage textile fabrication techniques including braiding, weaving, knitting and non-woven formation to create new and novel structures.

Design and implement novel post-processing techniques for the scouring, finishing, or final assembly of biomedical textile components.

Develop and document manufacturing processes to support the company’s internal product development process and comply with Quality Management standards.

Expand Cortland’s expertise in state-of-the-art engineering, manufacturing methods and materials utilization through technical journals, seminars, advance degree programs, etc.

Successfully interact globally with medical customers and industry groups to identify market opportunities.

Stay current in the status of competitive products and intellectual property (IP) that may affect the company’s competitive position, evaluate these products, provide analysis, and suggest countermeasures as necessary.

Collaborate with Quality to ensure that all applicable quality procedures and regulations are followed throughout the development, manufacturing, and launch phases.

Support business development efforts by providing technical assistance, field support, conducting presentations, and/or other related activities as needed.

Prepare drawings and supervise manufacturing staff in the production of prototypes in accordance with sound engineering principles and project goals.

Responsible for maintaining engineering documentation of medical products in accordance to applicable quality standards.

Write and execute engineering and scientific protocols to support the creation of statistically based product specifications.

Create, audit, and review test standards and specifications for the analysis of design concepts and component assemblies.

Integrate new products from engineering to production and provide continued support to ensure product meets all design criteria.

25-50% domestic and international travel in support of customers, engineering projects, joint industry programs and trade conferences.

Required Capabilities (describe scope of knowledge and ability of the position):

BS Degree in Mechanical, Materials or Textile Engineering or Technology from an accredited university

0-3 years engineering experience.

Must have demonstrated creative problem solving and effective engineering decision making skills.

Effective verbal and written communication skills and comfortable interacting with team members and customers at all levels.

Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as a team member.

Self-starter able to work under minimal supervision

Capable of generating and delivering presentations to management, peers and medical device customers.

Familiar with the physical and mechanical characteristics of polymers, fibers and fabrics a preferred.

Familiar with the use of synthetic polymers, bioresorbable polymers and/or metallic wires in medical device products preferred.

Demonstrated proficiency of design software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks a plus.
