Summary – basic function of the role

The Manufacturing Process Engineer is an Engineer who has between 3-7 yrs of Fulltime experience managing projects in a manufacturing environment. They are responsible for design, review, and implementation of manufacturing process flows and control strategies for improved productivity. Focus on continuous improvement activities (Lean & Six Sigma) which provide cost reductions and quality improvements for the Columbus manufacturing facility. Lead process design efforts on plant projects and New Product Development projects to improve manufacturing efficiency, cost, and quality. Facilitate communications between key suppliers, internal and external customers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Continuous Improvement – reduce waste, drive cost reductions, and make quality improvements through Lean and Six Sigma activities.

Review and design layout and material presentation strategies to production areas to optimize manufacturing flow and minimize wasted time, effort, and cost.

Review new product designs for effective and low cost manufac­turing process flows.

Initiate action and follow-up to incorporate changes prior to pre-production sign off.

Provide cost estimates for process improvements on new products and major product changes.

Prepare summary and submits pre-production product costs with tooling and equipment investment for ROI analysis. Prepare Authorizations for Expenditure (AFE’s) for new product tooling and equipment.

Specifies and/or provides necessary tools, fixtures, equipment and related training as required for plant production and testing.

Investigate new process control & inventory strategies, machine tool innovations, and improvements in plant layout design to continuously up-date production efficiencies.

Evaluate suppliers’ capabilities for meeting future requirements advising new manufacturing methodology and recommending equipment investments.

Review Engineering Change Orders (ECO’s) as to feasibility and effect on process flows and efficiencies.

Responsible for quality improvement and cost reduction of assigned products. Share responsibility for meeting departmental cost reduction goals.

Responsible for administering major capital investments in facilities and manufactur­ing processes.

Required Skills:
Organization skills for high volume applications

Function at a Six Sigma Green Belt level

Prioritize the quality issues of the manufacturing cell and assist in product and component failure analysis causing throughput and efficiency issues

Facilitate the team problem solving activities

Successfully lead a team and championed a project

Proficient use of Manufacturing Requirements Planning (MRP), Just in Time (JIT), and KanBan systems

Basic to intermediate PC skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel

Effectively communicate (orally and through written communications) with staff on all levels of the organization (direct labor to executives)

Education Requirements : Bachelor’s degree (BS) in engineering from a four-year college or university is absolutely required.

Experience Requirements : Minimum of five years related experience. Demonstrated the following: experience implementing new processes in APQP or an equivalent phase/gate product development process; experience assembly operations and design for manufacturability; history of designing tooling/fixturing/test for assembly operations; history of safety/ergonomic design and consideration for assembly operations; project management experience and project lead responsibilities for major capital projects. Machining knowledge desired.
