The UCSD Media Teaching Lab is a facility supporting media production education and the coursework of UCSD’s graduate and undergraduate communities. The MTL’s equipment checkout room, media classrooms, editing suites, and robust offering of workshops form a crucial part of coursework in Commmunications, Visual Arts, and throughout the university.
As Media Educator and Production Technician, you will be part of a exciting and varied working environment – teaching workshops, supporting student production work, and managing and repairing equipment and computers. Students and faculty come from a wide variety of backgrounds and with different media interests, from experimental video, to documentary, to narrative filmmaking. You will have the opportunity to develop and teach a course of workshops every quarter on all aspects of production, including your special areas of expertise.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for technical educational support to the University’s media production community
- Provides guidance and assistance to students in pre-planning, production and post-production of video and film projects.
- Educational responsibilities include in-class collaborative instruction, group workshops, and one-on-one support with topics including digital video cinematography (DSLR, Cinema camera, camcorder); sound production; lighting; 16mm film making; TV studio production; and Apple post production platforms including Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere CC, After Effects CC, and audio applications such as Pro Tools and Adobe Audition.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot hardware & software issues relating to Mac Pro computers and software is required.
- Assisting in the administration of the equipment checkout facility, production studios, editing suites and classrooms, equipment acquisition and repair.
- The ability to clearly communicate media production concepts to undergraduate and graduate students of all levels is crucial.

QUALIFICATIONS
-
Graduation from college with a major in instructional media, film/video production or a related field; and one year of professional media production experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Advanced knowledge, ability and demonstrated experience to create and teach Premiere CC, After Effects CC, Avid Media Composer, lighting techniques, advanced techniques in 16mm filmmaking, audio techniques and HD Workflow workshops to facilitate the education of production and post-production skills for student filmmakers within the collaborative classroom.

Proven ability and skill in communicating and training of people with a non-technical, non-production background which may require simplified explanations of technical equipment and procedures.

Demonstrated experience in, or knowledge of, the ability to repair camera equipment, audio equipment, tripods, light meters, and lighting equipment.

Working knowledge of and ability to diagnose and solve problems with Mac computers, specifically hardware and software problems related to video production programs, including external backup drives.
Preferred

Skill in assisting and directing student workers in an equipment checkout facility.

Demonstrated ability to maintain databases and create usage reports using Excel.
