Research Aerospace Engineer

Position: Research Aerospace Engineer
Company: National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Location: Hampton VA US

    Duties

    Summary

The Research Directorate at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) is currently seeking interested applicants to fill the position of Research Aerospace Engineer in the Aeroacoustics Branch (D314). The incumbent serves as a research engineer team member in the field of Aeroacoustics, performing research addressing challenges on problems of exceptional interest to NASA Aeronautics Programs including noise generated by vehicles in flight, noise generated by the interaction of complex flowfields with lifting or non-lifting surfaces, and noise generated by complex flowfields in isolation. The incumbent serves on a team that conducts research on propeller and rotor air vehicle systems ranging in size from small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to full scale aircraft and rotorcraft in flight enabling noise prediction of conventional and unconventional aircraft configurations with multiple levels of fidelity.

Position may be filled at either the GS-11, GS-12, or GS-13 level. The full performance level for this position is GS-13. If selected at the lower levels, employee may be non-competitively promoted to the next grade when qualified and recommended by management.

Deliberate attempts to falsify your application information, such as copying portions of this job announcement into your resume, may result in you being removed from consideration for this position.

As identical vacancies are identified, additional selections may be made.

To receive consideration, you must submit a resume and answer NASA-specific questions. The NASA questions appear after you submit your resume and are transferred to the NASA web site. If you successfully apply, USAJOBS will show your application status as ‘Received’. If your status is ‘Application Status Not Available’, you have not successfully applied. Do not rely on a USAJOBS email to confirm successful application. Only an email from NASA confirms a successful application.

    Responsibilities

Duties described at the full performance level (GS-13).

The incumbent serves as a researcher working primarily in the area of flight vehicle acoustics, including experimental, analytical, and computational research into the prediction and suppression of fixed and/or rotary wing aircraft noise, with emphasis on individual noise sources (e.g., rotating blades, propellers, airframe) and the combined system noise of the aircraft in flight.

The successful candidate will join an energetic team with duties to conduct research on propeller and rotor air vehicle systems ranging in size from small UAS to full scale aircraft and rotorcraft in flight. Better understanding of the integration and interaction effects at the vehicle level are crucial to improved predictive tools that will support new unconventional vehicle platforms. The research may be experimental, analytical, or computational in nature, or a combination of these, and may vary in focus from the study of a noise source on a vehicle to the estimation of the total noise generated by that vehicle.

The position requires a thorough knowledge of acoustics and fluid mechanics. The incumbent analyzes and interprets the results of laboratory and field tests, evaluates comparisons of analytical and experimental results, and reports the results at technical conferences and in the scientific literature. The incumbent also serves as a technical expert and interfaces with other researchers in industry, universities, NASA, and other government agencies.

The incumbent could also serve in aerospace engineering project planning work including coordinating and integrating the planning, programming, development, oversight, scheduling, and overall management of resources for multi-phase projects.

The incumbent may serve as Technical Monitor for contracts and grants and develop Space Act Agreements to accomplish collaborative research with external organizations.
