Position: Exhibits Specialist II (12804, Grade H)

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Montgomery County Department of Parks is a nationally recognized and award-winning parks department. Our park system now includes more than 400 parks on over 34,000 acres of parkland.
The four nature centers of Montgomery Parks (Brookside Nature Center, Black Hill Visitor Center, Locust Grove Nature Center, and Meadowside Nature Center) seek an imaginative and innovative full-time Exhibit Specialist II. The Exhibit Specialist II will be responsible for developing, designing, and creating engaging exhibits, visitor experiences, and interpretive and wayfinding signage that communicate the nature center’s interpretive messages in unusual and memorable ways. The Exhibit Specialist will ensure that exhibits have a “fun” or “Wow!” factor that will drive attendance to the nature centers. This position reports to the Nature Centers’ Supervisor and will collaborate and coordinate with nature center staff and other Park work units such as Marketing and Facilities Management.

Examples of Important Job Duties:
- Serve as primary exhibit designer for Brookside Nature Center, Black Hill Visitor Center, Locust Grove Nature Center, and Meadowside Nature Center.
- Participate in the development of interpretive content and interpretive planning.
- Conduct site visits and researches ideas and materials for exhibits.
- Develop detailed design packages from concept through schematic to construction/fabrication drawings.
- Manage exhibit design projects of varying scope and complexity including budgets, schedule, production, installation, evaluation, and maintenance.
- Fabricate exhibit components or oversees outside contractors that may be brought in to perform specific design and production functions.
- Manage several design projects simultaneously.
- Participates in programs and special events.
- Support fundraising and donor/sponsor cultivation efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exhibit design experience for museum environments, aquariums or zoos.
- Has background or experience in engineering, design, or other related field.
- Experience developing highly interactive, creative and inventive museum exhibits.
- Broad fabrication skills.
- Good illustrator.
- Ability to work with a wide diversity of people and to build consensus.
- Hands-on, positive, team player.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment with low supervision.
- Ability to solve problems creatively.
- Knowledge and ability to effectively use 2D and 3D visual design and design tools (e.g. SketchUp, Vectorworks (CAD), AutoDesk (CAD), InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate complex ideas.
- Experience with evaluation methodologies and tools a plus.
Working Conditions:
- Moderately heavy lifting.
- Frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from dangerous chemicals and frequently exposed to the hazards of operating hand and powered tools and equipment.
- Work scheduled weekends and evenings.
- Works in indoor and outdoor settings.
- Portfolio required.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in commercial arts, graphic arts, studio arts, or related subjects; and two years of experience in commercial or graphic arts; or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
