Film Centre Manager

Position: Film Centre Manager

Oversees the JHU MICA Film Centre facilities, equipment, and assists in the student’s educational and creative process.

General purpose: Manage and maintain a communal workspace, and educational environment that includes technical facilities, classroom needs and interface effectively within the JHU and MICA community.

Responsibilities:

• Manage programmatic needs at the JHU MICA Film Centre

• Oversee access to production and post-production resources

• Supervise, train and coordinate employees and student workers

• Maintain classrooms, facilities and equipment


Position responsibilities:

• Develop, oversee use and maintain related policy for JHU MICA Film Centre production and post-production equipment and check out facilities

• Develop, oversee use and maintain related policy for Film Centre classroom, lab and studio facilities

• Collaboratively develop with Program Coordinator and Centre Co-Directors, to implement and communicate a Film Centre manual that includes Film Centre policies, roles and responsibilities, and best practices for smooth functioning of the Film Centre

• Ensure that all members of the MICA community (students, faculty, staff) that utilize classroom, lab and studio facilities are trained on safety and other policies and procedures specific to the space

• Design, execute and implement space renovations and technology upgrades to update and improve the Film Centre facilities, studios, classrooms, labs, and flexible spaces in collaboration with appropriate MICA departments

• Manage annual turnover of studio, lab and classroom space to ensure successful beginning of the school year

• Serve as a subject matter expert as well as research and consultative support on film equipment and processes for students, faculty and staff including technical and programmatic recommendations when appropriate

• Develop and implement staff training on film skills, best practices, safety and support to maximize level of service to faculty and students in the department

• Provide technical and classroom support and collaborate with MICA AV services as needed.

• Manage the ordering of all equipment and research/execute purchases of equipment to update and expand what the department has to offer with support of Film Centre admin.

• Work with Centre Program Coordinator and Centre Co-Directors in managing Centre budget.

• Develop and deliver instructional workshops on software and equipment as needed

• Manage shift schedule in support of equipment CAGE hours and classroom support.

• Perform other related duties as assigned

Requires skills and experience:

• Bachelors degree in a related field

• Proven supervisory experience

• Direct experience in video production.

• Proficiency in audio field recording and audio studio production.

• Experience with Adobe Premiere, AVID Media Composer, ProTools, Adobe After Effects.

• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Power Point

• Ability to set priorities, delegate, motivate and communicate objectives.

• Ability to teach and mentor students and collaborate with faculty in Film Centre technical processes

• Self-Directed, well organized, with excellent communication and social skills

• Strong supervisory, management and administrative skills

Valued but not required skills and experience:

• Master’s degree in a related field.

• Experience with 16mm film.

• Experience in advanced post-production sound mixing and color grading.

Reporting to this position: One full-time assistant manager, two part-time technicians and student workers
