Mixer is the newest addition to the Xbox family. At Mixer we’ve redefined the rules for what constitutes live streaming. We don’t talk about delay in terms of seconds, in our world we operate in milliseconds. We’re able to do things never thought possible to make the viewer and streamer experience far more engaging and interactive. From the obvious; seeing a streamer respond to a chat message instantly, to the exciting; allowing a viewer to interact directly with the game the streamer is playing, we’ve made the viewers part of the action and we’re not stopping there!

Mixer is looking for an experienced broadcast engineer to join our video team. Our video team delivers core capabilities for stream ingest, distribution, & playback. The ideal candidate will also have deep domain knowledge in low latency media delivery, media encoding/transcoding/decoding, and general transport of audio and video streams. You will be required to provide strong leadership, contribute to the overall vision, set clear requirements, and drive for success for our partners and enjoyment by our consumers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience with programming/scripting languages (e.g. C#, C++, Java, Powershell, Ruby, Python, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Requires demonstrated experience with hardware production switchers such as Grass Valley Miranda, and Elemental hardware encoders.
  • Experience creating and managing public cloud solutions (i.e. Azure, AWS, etc.)
  • Proven hands‐on technical expertise in large scale media processing systems engineering & complex broadcasting distribution systems
  • Solid understanding of network fundamentals, including TCP/IP and related technologies
  • Experience with video algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software tool design or automation
  • Proven experience creating distributed systems tools of moderate to high complexity
  • Solid understanding of operating system fundamentals and diagnostic capabilities
  • Sufficient technical depth to communicate constructively with peers in development and product management
  • Experience with low latency media connection handshakes and transport (SIP, STUN/TURN/ICE, DTLS, WebRTC, RTP, H.264, OPUS)
  • Experience developing highly reliable and scalable micro services.
  • Experience working with RTMP and HLS.
  • Strong desire to work with streamers and viewers to troubleshoot issues.
  • Experience working in a dynamic startup environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug .NET, java, SQL and other technologies
  • In depth knowledge of open source data technologies

Responsibilities

  • Provide top-tier encoding support for large scale, zero fail events.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering teams through the service lifecycle to ensure operational tasks and milestones are delivered on time
  • Influence service design, architecture, standards & processes to ensure availability, security, and compliance
  • Troubleshoot service incidents, building tools and automation to eliminate problem recurrence and enable automated recovery
  • Design and deliver video delivery pipelines that allow us to measure and/or improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of Mixer services
  • Engage in service capacity planning, software performance analysis and system tuning
  • Participate in regular service reviews with senior leadership
  • Participate in 24X7 on-call rotation
  • Build relationships and share experiences and knowledge throughout the organization
