YouTube TV’s linear infra team is responsible for capturing and operating linear TV feed reliably and at scale. As a member of the team, you have a direct impact on design and feature enhancements to keep our systems running smoothly. You also ensure that video operations are safe and efficient by monitoring network performance, coordinating planned maintenance, adjusting hardware components and responding to video quality issues.

As a Video Engineer, you will help design the next generation of the YouTube TV Video network and service, and continuously drive the evolution and innovation of the system. You will be familiar with equipment common to video headends including receivers, encoders, groomers, NMS and monitoring systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead or collaborate with the YouTube TV video infrastructure team, Network Operations team and 3rd party vendors on key projects related to design and implementation of the linear TV capture system, as well as the operation, maintenance and ongoing improvements of the system.
  • Identify potential issues actively and drive the efforts to improve the design to minimize production issues arising from TV capture infra, and reduce manual intervention to meet target metrics.
  • Drive innovation to maximize automation of the configuration and management of the video network, and auto-discovery and resolution of the issues. Apply technical judgment to resolve problems on technical issues escalated, help improve the playbook, and train on an ongoing basis as our system evolves.
  • Build and run the broadcasting system lab to test and evaluate emerging technologies and platforms in order to make recommendations to improve the system. Manage cross-functional and third-party resources for the implementation of system designs.
  • Work with other Google groups and industry participants to advocate and improve TV / video standards, as well as platforms and technologies, providing feedback to refine them and align them with Google’s strategy.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Civil Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in the broadcasting industry as a video engineer or equivalent practical experience.
  • Operational experience with cable / satellite or IPTV headends, including IRD, encoders, CAS, and NMS system deployment and configuration.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of H.264, MPEG2, ATSC and DVB-S S2,T.
  • Strong technical background in broadcasting systems.
